MANILA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- An offshore earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 shook the southern Philippines on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) said.
The institute said the quake, which struck at 2:06 p.m. local time, hit about 34 km northeast of Surigao del Sur province in Mindanao with a depth of 45 km.
In a statement, the institute said the quake was felt in Surigao del Sur province, Misamis Oriental province, South Cotabato province and Sarangani province.
The institute said the quake, which was tectonic in origin, will trigger aftershocks.
The Philippines has frequent seismic activities due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
