MANILA -- A magnitude-5.8 quake jolted Davao Oriental on Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The tectonic quake struck 147 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Tarragona at 4:21 p.m.
It was 2 kilometers deep.
Earlier today, Phivolcs also recorded tectonic quakes with magnitudes 5.2 and 5.7, and epicenters 140 kilometers east and 136 kilometers southeast of the same municipality, respectively.
Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. said both earthquakes were caused by the movement along the Philippine Trench.
The magnitude-5.8 quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Malungon, and Alabel, Sarangani; Davao City; Tampakan, South Cotabato
Intensity 2 was felt in Tupi, South Cotabato; General Santos City; Kiamba, Sarangani; while Intensity 1 was felt in Santo Nino, South Cotabato; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.
Phivolcs also recorded the following instrumental intensities:
Intensity 3 - Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani
Intensity 2 - Davao City; Tupi, and Koronadal City, South Cotabato; Glan, and Kiamba, Sarangani; Nabunturan, Davao De Oro
Intensity 1 - T'boli, South Cotabato; Maasim, Sarangani; Kidapawan City, Cotabato; Kidapawan City
Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.
Aftershocks are likely, but damage is not expected since damage usually starts at Intensity 6 based on Phivolcs' scale.
Last month, Solidum urged the people in Davao Oriental to prepare for a strong earthquake or tsunami as these can be generated along the Philippine Trench. (PNA)
