MANILA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- An offshore earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 rattled Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines on Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The institute said the quake, which occurred at 4:21 p.m. local time (0921 GMT), hit at a depth of 17 km, about 129 km southeast of Tarragona town of Davao Oriental province.
It was the second tremor that jolted the region on Thursday. The institute reported that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake also jolted the same town at 5:41 a.m. local time (2141 GMT Wednesday). The institute said the first quake hit at a depth of 96 km, about 136 km southeast of Tarragona.
Both quakes were also felt in nearby provinces on Mindanao island. The institute said the tectonic quakes will trigger aftershocks but will not cause damage.
The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
