Left-hander Maxen Snoozy struck out 10 straight batters from the first to the fourth and gave up just three hits on Tuesday night as South Dakota stayed alive in the Little League World Series with a deceptive 9-0 victory over Washington in South Williamsport, Pa.
Sioux Falls, S.D., representing the Midwest Region, owned just one run and one hit midway through the fifth. Northwest loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Snoozy wriggled out of the jam by registering his 12th and 13th strikeouts.
Bonney Lake, Wash. retired South Dakota's first two batters in the sixth, but South Dakota pieced together six hits, three walks and one error to score eight insurance runs against Washington's bullpen. Northwest starter Andrew Madsen went five innings and allowed one hit, one unearned run and struck out three while walking eight.
Snoozy registered his 14th and final whiff to open the sixth, then tipped his cap to the crowd as he left the game after hitting the 85-pitch limit. Tayson White, who had two RBIs at the plate, got the final two outs to set up South Dakota's United States consolation semifinal clash with South Carolina on Wednesday night.
South Carolina 3, Hawaii 0
Brady Westbrooks fired a four-hit shutout to lead South Carolina past Hawaii.
Joe Giulietti went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Southeast Region squad from Irmo, S.C. Andrew Bogan added a clutch two-run single with two outs in the top of the sixth to give South Carolina some breathing room.
Bronson Fermahin started for the West Region team from Honolulu and allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings before Logan Brokaw took over. Brokaw gave up two runs and four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Mason Mitani cracked a double for Hawaii.
Aruba 6, Canada 1
Four pitchers from Santa Cruz, Aruba, teamed up for a four-hitter as the Caribbean Region team earned the elimination-game victory over the squad from Vancouver.
Aruba starter Anthony Santos gave up four hits and one run in his three innings, but he made up for the run he allowed by hitting a game-tying homer to lead off the bottom of the first. Relievers Liam Pena Caraballo, Arnold Gismar Martha and Rylan Quandt combined for three hitless innings as Aruba gradually pulled away.
Canada broke to a 1-0 lead in the first as Felix Hoyano, Caleb Jackson and Misha Lee loaded the bases with consecutive singles. Hoyano came in to score on Tyson Grimsrud-Ronse's fielder's choice. Hoyano started for Canada and allowed four hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Japan 6, Mexico 0
Yushi Yamamoto and Ritsugu Furusato combined for a four-hit shutout as Tokyo moved into the International consolation bracket semifinal with the win over Chihuahua. Japan will face Aruba on Wednesday afternoon.
Yamamoto fanned eight, scattered three singles and walked no one before giving way to Furusato with one out in the sixth. Yamamoto also went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the first and a two-run homer in the fifth. Tensei Yazawa smacked a three-run homer in the first to stake Japan to a 4-0 lead.
Iker Castaneda went the distance for Mexico and allowed 10 hits in six innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Brandon Acevedo, Elias Martinez, Gregorio Madrid and Ian Cano collected singles in Chihuahua's final game.
